چکیده

Neutral hydrogen traces gravitational potentials. In the nearby universe, 21cm emission-line surveys show that the bulk of the HI resides in well-formed, optically-luminous galaxies. At high redshift, 21cm line absorption against background radio quasars occurs in gas-rich systems identified with the highest HI column densities – the " damped Lyman alpha " quasar absorption-line systems. High spatial-resolution observations of the red-shifted 21cm line absorbers measure sizes and kinematics of the neutral absorbers.

Visibility of Old Supernova Remnants in Hi 21 - cm

We estimate the number of old, radiative supernova remnants (SNRs) detectable in Hi 21-cm emission line in the Galaxy. We assume that old SNRs consist of expanding Hi shells and that they are visible if the line-of-sight velocities are sufficiently outside the velocity range of the Galactic background Hi emission. This criterion of visibility makes it possible to calculate the background contam...

Local benchmarks for SKA HI 21-cm surveys

One of the obvious tasks for the Square Kilometer Array is to perform deep neutral hydrogen 21-cm emission line surveys out to large redshifts. For the planning of these surveys, and for the interpretation of the results, it is important to have solid z = 0 benchmarks. This paper summarizes some of the results of local extragalactic 21-cm surveys and their implications on the interpretation of ...

An Improved Technique for Measurement of Cold HI in Molecular Cloud Cores

The presence of atomic gas mixed with molecular species in a “molecular” cloud may significantly affect its chemistry, the excitation of some species, and can serve as probe of the cloud’s evolution. Cold neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) in molecular clouds is revealed by its self absorption of background galactic HI 21-cm emission. The properties of this gas can be investigated quantitatively thro...

Probing Reionization with Intensity Mapping of Molecular and Fine Structure Lines

We propose observations of the molecular gas distribution during the era of reionization. At z ∼ 6 to 8, 12CO(J = 1 − 0) line intensity results in a mean brightness temperature of about 0.5 μK with rms fluctuations of 0.1 μK at 1 to 10 Mpc spatial scales, corresponding to 30 arcminute angular scales. This intensity fluctuations can be mapped with an interferometer, similar to existing and plann...

On the origin of the galaxy luminosity function

Evidence is summarized which suggests that when a protogalaxy collapses, a fraction f of its gas fails to heat to the virial temperature, where f is large for haloes less massive than the value M∗ associated with L∗ galaxies. Stars and galaxies form only from the cool gas fraction. Hot gas is ejected from low-mass systems as in conventional semi-analytic models of galaxy formation. In high-mass...
